SMWC: Funding Request Submitted for Fish Food on Floodplain Farm Fields Program

The District has applied for funding to support landowners interested in the Fish Food on Floodplain Farm Fields Program. The application period closed in early September and we are hopeful we will be notified about funding by early October.

Fish Food on Floodplain Farm Fields is a collaborative project with farmers, conservationists, universities, and state and federal agencies to use rice fields after harvest for the production of invertebrates desired by California’s native fish. Current studies are revealing salmon who have access to nutrient rich habitats, such as the floodplains/ricelands, grow five times faster, thus better preparing the salmon to store more energy and avoid predators as they travel to the Pacific Ocean. The hope is that by creating healthier salmon during outward migration, we will see a boost to salmon populations in California.
